Our Bees

We work alongside nature

 Our Bees

Our season begins in August with bee health checks. Each hive is cleaned and inspected for disease and mites, and queen health, and provided with supplementary feed in the form of sugar syrup or protein substitute if required.

From August to November the bees are checked every three weeks. During this time they are also double queened to reduce swarming and improve honey production.

By late November early December, all bees are on their honey sites, where they are supered up.

All our beekeepers get a well-earned break over Christmas before we start the harvest in late Jan. This continues until mid-March when we treat the bees for varroa and supplementary feed if necessary. In April the bees are wintered down and returned to their overwintering sites to rest during winter.

Pollination

We pride ourselves on the strength and quality of our hives which facilitate numerous world-class fruit growers in the Tasman region with pollination.  We work hand in hand with orchardists to carefully position our hives into apples and kiwi fruit to ensure effective pollination takes place.
